History

The property is a deconsecrated church formerly known as St John’s Anglican Church. The church was established on 23 December 1914.  Over the years the church has been a meeting place for the community with many local families married, christened and family funerals. Rev Boyd Wilson, of Cromwell, was vicar for the Dunstan parish in the 1990s and said that Millers Flat, like all the congregations, “had a character of its own, because of the district, the land and the people”. Declining numbers of parishioners led to the closure of the church and was deconsecrated on 24 May 2013.

Anna and Glen Perkins purchased the church in 2020, with the aim to restore. With COVID 19 and council requirements its been a journey to get this space ready for you.

Glen & Anna Perkins

The building is listed in the Central Otago District Council (CODC) register of Heritage Building. It was important to them to retain as much of the heritage values of the building as practicable, their family has a substantial history with the former St John’s Anglican Church, the township and  the area.

The circular stain glass window is one of the distinctive features of the building, Each of the other windows in the church has a unique design creating amazing light and atmosphere, it must be seen to believe.

Anna and Glen have had plenty of local support in their restoration of the building.
